Journalist Luis Rojo has reported via MARCA that Barcelona are still dreaming of Xavi’s continuity despite the manager’s wish to depart at the end of the season.

Barcelona’s exit from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of PSG has sparked renewed discussions about Xavi’s future as the team’s coach.

Even though he still has a year left on his contract, the manager announced in January his intention to depart at the end of the season.

Recently, though, there has been speculation that Xavi might be rethinking his decision.

Laporta wants Xavi to continue

It is said that Joan Laporta is still hoping that Xavi will reverse his decision and stay to fulfil the remaining year of his contract.

Despite the defeat against PSG, Laporta’s desire remains unchanged. He still considers Xavi as his top choice for the coach’s position for the upcoming year.

Xavi, however, stands firm on his decision as he believes it would be best for him to leave the club. He has been vocal about this stance for some time now and he thinks making his intentions public was a smart move.

This is because it positively influenced the team’s performance, which went on a 13-game unbeaten streak.

As for Laporta, he plans to persuade Xavi to continue and he will wait until the next match against Real Madrid to discuss the matter.

The outcome of the game at Bernabeu could also provide insight into the team’s future trajectory—whether they can continue competing for the league or if their chances are now minimal.

Barcelona have an option ready

If Xavi decides not to continue, the club is considering Rafa Marquez as a possible replacement.

Although Marquez wasn’t their top choice initially when Xavi announced his departure, circumstances have changed.

However, no decisions have been made yet and the Sports Directorate wants to resolve the Xavi situation before focusing on finding a replacement.

Marquez is one of the potential candidates, but other coaches are also being considered. The decision will heavily depend on the reinforcements the new coach can bring. At the moment, no major signings are expected.
