With Eddie Howe looking to make key signings to bolster his squad this summer, the upcoming transfer window could be the busiest yet for Newcastle United, who are aiming to become regular contenders in Europe.

However, this will likely lead to inevitable departures too. Some current players may be prompted to seek alternative options and here are the most likely players to depart from St James’ Park.

Odysseas Vlachodimos

The Greek international goalkeeper and former Benfica and Nottingham Forest goalkeeper has barely seen any game time at St. James’ Park, with his only appearance being a half-time substitution for The Magpies in a Carabao Cup game against AFC Wimbledon.

Originally signing for the club for £20 million just after Nottingham Forest bought Elliot Anderson for £15 million, it is clear the keeper is not preferred by Howe.

Vlachodimos has faced plenty of competition and has been relegated to being the third-choice goalkeeper, just above John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie, who have not played a single minute this season.

The keeper may be willing to look elsewhere for more game time and may be the first player to depart Newcastle come 1 June.

Sean Longstaff

Rumours suggest the academy product may attract major interest from Leeds United and Everton, who will be looking to strengthen their squad for the next Premier League season.

Longstaff is due to enter the remaining 12 months of his contract this summer, and having only played 24 matches, most of which saw him come on as a substitute, it means his place in an strong Newcastle squad has become less certain.

He may look elsewhere to keep a prosperous career on track, making an exit for the player very likely.

Jamal Lewis

Having originally signed for the Magpies in 2020 from Norwich City for a fee of £15 million, Lewis became a regular starter for the Magpies before the Saudi takeover.

However, Lewis was loaned out to Championship side Watford last season, and Sao Paolo this season. Lewis has acknowledged that his time at Newcastle is very much nearing the end.

Having struggled to find any game time other than a few pre-season matches prior to his loan move, Lewis, speaking to the Daily Mail said: “I’ve spoken to the manager and I’m in my last year, and I’ve done a season-long loan, so that kind of has the writing on the wall.”

The player has expressed desire to make Brazil his permanent home, saying: “If Sao Paulo can be my long-term home for the future, that would be amazing.”

Callum Wilson

Having joined Newcastle during their 2020 campaign, the striker proved himself as an integral part of the club’s progression, from battling relegation to competing in the Champions League.

However, in recent months, Wilson has been plagued by injuries and, as a result, has spent more time on the sideline than on the pitch.

With little chance that he will displace the in form Alexander Isak, Wilson is expected to leave Newcastle upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
