The 2021/22 Women’s Super League season was a treat for all, with some familiar names shining bright again and other talents on the rise.
Here is who makes our team of the season.
Arsenal only lost one match this season thanks to an impressive WSL campaign from Manuela Zinsberger in net. She finished the season with 40 saves, only 10 goals conceded and 13 clean sheets (joint second most) from 20 appearances.
Runner-up: Hannah Hampton (Aston Villa)
A surprise name in the running for the WSL Player of the Season but not without reason. Ashleigh Neville’s consistent performances helped Spurs soar as an up-and-coming side.
She finished in the 97th percentile for dribbles completed and tackles, 95th for aerials won, 92nd for clearances, and also had three goals and two assists.
Runner-up: Jess Carter (Chelsea)
One name who had a standout season but flew under the radar was Emma Koivisto. Ranked in the top 10 for most minutes as a defender, the 27-year-old had the second-most tackles (77) and blocks (58) across the league for Brighton.
Runner-up: Maya Le Tissier (Brighton)
In the absence of captain Magdalena Eriksson, it was Millie Bright who often stepped up for Chelsea. A vital member of the three-peat winning side with true leadership qualities, she’s primed to have a stellar Euros as well.
Runner-up: Leah Williamson (Arsenal)
Manchester United’s impressive development was anchored by Ona Battle at both ends of the pitch. She finished the season with one goal, three assists, third-most tackles (76) and hit the 90th percentile for progressive ball carries.
Runner-up: Alex Greenwood (Manchester City)
A game-changer for Emma Hayes, Guro Reiten’s seven goals and four assists arrived in the moments Chelsea needed it the most – including on the final day to clinch the title.
Runner-up: Jessie Fleming (Chelsea)
When Manchester City were on the brink, someone needed to step up and that was once again Caroline Weir.
Her ability to create something out of nothing led to six goals and four assists which included vital winners against Manchester United and Tottenham to help City climb to third.
Runner-up: Katie Zelem (Manchester United)
Another player tipped to shine at Euro 2022, Ella Toone showed just how versatile she can be for Manchester United. The alert and eager midfielder registered seven goals and seven assists plus ranked in the 97th percentile for progressive passes. Look out England!
Runner-up: Katie McCabe (Arsenal)
2021/2022 was be the year of Beth Mead took the leap and helped drive Arsenal’s attack alongside Vivianne Miedema (11 goals and six assists). But she pips her team-mate to our TOTS selection simply because she cemented herself into WSL history, scoring her 50th goal and becoming the league’s all-time top assist provider.
Mead is arguably the one player who can give Kerr a run for her money in the race for WSL Player of the Season.
Runner-up: Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal)
Sam Kerr continues to prove her value season after season. The Golden Boot winner (20 goals) found the net on more occasions individually than each of Aston Villa, Everton, Leicester City and Birmingham City.
Runner-up: Khadija Bunny Shaw (Manchester City)
Lauren Hemp continues her stellar rise in the WSL as the all-round attacker who helped lift Manchester City into a Champions League spot.
The 21-year-old was in the 99th percentile for progressive carries and 95th for expected goals which led to 10 goals and four assists plus a league-leading 105 crosses.
Runner-up: Kateřina Svitková (West Ham)
