That’s all she wrote.

The Bundesliga season is over and there won’t be any more German football until September. But who were the standout performers in 2019/20 season? We’ve sat down, plucked them from their sides, and put them into a star-studded 4-4-2 formation.

And no, they aren’t all Bayern players!

GK: Yann Sommer (Borussia M’gladbach)

Runner-up: Manuel Neuer

If one man was most responsible for Gladbach’s early season title challenge, it was Yann Sommer. One of the Bundesliga’s finest goalkeepers for years, this season saw him become the standout.

A consistent presence between the posts, Sommer’s crowning moment came against Bayern, when he dragged the ball from going over the line with the tip of his fingers. Quite literally.

RB: Achraf Hakimi (Borussia Dortmund)

Runner-up: Nordi Mukiele

Hakimi can play on the left, or on the right. He can run like the wind. He’s good in the air. And he might be the most effective offensive wing-back in the world right now at the age of 21.

A goal or assist every 181 league minutes in 2019/20, from WING-BACK, is an incredible return.

CB: Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig)

Runner-up: Nico Elvedi

There was plenty of talk about him before but this was Upamecano’s best season at Leipzig yet. The Frenchman stepped up another gear in the absence of regular defensive partner Ibrahima KonatĆ©.

Almost impossible to beat on the ground and dominant in the air, he’s brilliant with the ball at his feet too. A force of nature.

CB: Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Runner-up: David Alaba

Borussia Dortmund weren’t as solid as they’d have hoped at the back but the return of Mats Hummels was an overwhelming success.

The German had an excellent season at the heart of the defence, showing there’s life in the old dog yet. He reads the game superbly and there’s still no better passer from the back in world football.

LB: Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich)

Runner-up: Raphaƫl Guerreiro

This was the year the world learned about Alphonso Davies. Already considered an attacking threat, Davies has proven himself to be a genuinely brilliant defender. Of course his pace helps, but oftentimes he snuffs danger out early and that recovery speed isn’t even needed.

Meep meep.

RM: Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich)

Runner-up: Marcel Sabitzer

Everyone thought Thomas Müller was past it. In the autumn, Niko Kovac wouldn’t start him rumours of him leaving Bayern were swirling.

Fast-forward to the end of the season and he’s broken the Bundesliga record for assists in a single season. As well as setting up 21 goals, he scored eight himself to register a goal or assist every 78 minutes. An outrageous return.

CM: Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich)

Runner-up: Denis Zakaria

A right-back no more. Joshua Kimmich is now one of the best midfielders in the world. Capable of controlling or deciding a game from the middle of the pitch, the German’s intelligence and technical prowess were all on show when he scored THAT goal against Dortmund.

Creative, dynamic, tenacious. The perfect midfield partner for …

CM: Thiago (Bayern Munich)

… the best midfielder in German football. Thiago’s defensive work is enormously underrated – the ground he covers and the regularity he wins the ball with is simply incredible.

When he gets the ball, he’s perfect. A sublime dribbler, an exquisite passer. One of a kind.

LM: Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund)

Runner-up: Serge Gnabry

If anyone thought Jadon Sancho’s second full senior season would see him slow down, with more attention from defenders and more pressure from supporters, they were wrong. He took it to another level.

A richly deserved return of 17 goals and 16 assists underlines his standing as one of the most exciting players on the planet.

ST: Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

Runner-up: Erling Haaland

What a season from Timo Werner. Previously considered a lightning-quick poacher, the German took his game to another level in 2019/20 under Julian Nagelsmann.

As well as managing his most prolific Bundesliga season (28 goals), he dropped deeper, linked play, and created chances for his team-mates better than ever before. He’ll be sorely missed.

ST: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)

Runner-up: Wout Weghorst

Just when you thought Lewandowski couldn’t get any better, he delivers the best season of his career. Still not sure about that? Tell the 34 Bundesliga goals he scored in 31 appearances.

Left foot, right foot, headed goals, poacher’s goals, smart dribbling, great movement. You name it, he scored it.
