It’s one of those transfer sagas that never quite seems to come close to actually happening but never looks like disappearing, either.

We are talking about Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old is half-way through his sixth season at Stamford Bridge now and as he approaches the age when most players peak, he will have to decide whether his future lies in London or elsewhere.

And conflicting reports suggest he may have either missed his chance to join the Spanish champions or he may soon be subject to a monster bid.

One claim in the British media says Madrid are preparing a £120m offer for the Belgian. Hazard’s current contract expires in 2020, meaning that by the time next summer comes around, he will only have two years remaining on the deal.

Chelsea will be keen to avoid a situation similar to the one Arsenal are experiencing with Alexis Sánchez and Mesut Özil and if Hazard is unwilling to agree to a new deal, the Blues may look to cash in.

But, if Marca are to be believed, they may not even have that option.

The Spanish paper claims that Madrid have now decided completely against making a play for Hazard.

The reason is that Madrid have put their faith in the young Spaniard Marco Asensio. The 21-year-old has shown flashes of brilliant potential and is seen by some as the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo’s throne at the Bernabéu.

Marca credit a senior board member at Madrid as asking in a meeting: “Why would we bring in the Belgian if we have Asensio?”

Any real movement in the Hazard saga would be incredibly unlikely in January but we should have a clearer picture of where his future lies by the time the summer is over.
