The LA Galaxy are on pace for the worst offense in league history this season

Memorable, epic, historical. Those are three of many adjectives that could be used to describe the Los Angeles Galaxy's 2024 MLS Cup championship run.

Those same words could also describe their 2025 MLS regular season. Unfortunately just not in the same light.

A year ago, the LA Galaxy owned the MLS Western Conference's best offense. With 69 goals scored, they showed flashes of greatness. Their offense was heavily wrapped around a quartet of stars.

Four players for the six-time MLS Cup winners scored at least ten goals. Of the four players, forward Dejan Joveljic has since been traded, and the other three from the quartet are now out hurt.

Is the LA Galaxy offense really that bad, though?

Oh just wait to read this! The LA Galaxy's title defense started out rough. They got shutout twice in their first three games. Both of those games were at home where the Galaxy were unbeaten at last year (Dignity Health Sports Park).

They have been shutout three times in their last four games. The worst outing, not just in LA Galaxy history but in the entire league's history, includes the 7-0 shellacking by the New York Red Bulls.

To highlight how bad things are, the Los Angeles Galaxy have recorded an own goal in back-to-back games. That has been the only time so far during the month of May that the team has found the back of the net. Veteran defenders Maya Yoshida and Miki Yamane were the culprits.

Since joining the LA Galaxy, goalkeeper John McCarthy has allowed no more than four goals before this Saturday's contest out East. He has allowed four goals against the Portland Timbers twice in the past eight months.

DC United owns the record for fewest goals scored in a season when they put up just 21 goals. That happened in the 2010 MLS regular season when there were only 30 games instead of the current 34 games.

"Today we were sh-t and that's the end of that, and from start to finish, it just didn't -- it wasn't good. And you know, a spade a spade. That was it. And there's other games through the course of the season where we played well and we just -- we either just made mistakes that hurt us or we didn't capitalize on moments that we need to and that's the difference in results. "Greg Vanney, LA Galaxy head coach

At the rate they are going at now, the Los Angeles Galaxy are even worse. DC United averaged 0.70 goals a game in 2010. The defending champions are producing an average of 0.67 goals a game after their first dozen contests.

The team has been hurting, literally and figuratively. Riqui Puig is still ruled out with no return close in sight. Joseph Paintsil is sidelined for the second time this season, and Gabriel Pec has since joined him. Both are nursing lower-body injuries.

First-year Galaxy forward Christian Ramirez has been the only dependable player on offense. His four goals this season account for half of the team's total in 2025.

The rest of the schedule for the month May does not look to favor the LA Galaxy's hopes of rebounding. Four of their five remaining opponents before June would be in the playoffs if the season ended today. That includes their next match-up against the Philadelphia Union and all three in-state foes (LAFC, the San Jose Earthquakes and a rematch against newcomers San Diego FC).

Ramirez can't be the only player tasked with scoring. The LA Galaxy are looking for answers this season but they are just as scarce as goals.
