It has been a struggling start for Chris Wilder and his Middlesbrough side, with the Teessiders picking up just 10 points from their opening 10 games.

It is a points tally that leaves them in the relegation zone in 22nd place, however, they are a mere five points from the play-offs.

This Championship campaign has proven to be close and competitive thus far, and whilst it has not been the best of starts for Wilder and Co. they have are still adapting after having to complete their summer business rather late on.

Speaking to Football League World about Wilder’s position at Middlesbrough, Carlton Palmer said: “Well, the good thing for Chris is he’s got a sensible chairman and a footballing chairman.

“And, that always helps because they understand the situation, Steve Gibson, he’s not one of those people who just sack for the sake of sacking and he understands the game of football.

“So, we all know the problems that was documented with Chris in terms of recruitments in pre-season. They didn’t get the players they wanted, and they didn’t have the squad that they wanted.

“So, I don’t see Chris as being under immediate threat, because of the knowledge of the chairman of the football club, but obviously, Chris won’t want to be down at the bottom end of the table.

“They’re not a million miles again from being in the playoffs. So you know, he’s got to arrest the situation, they’ve got to start picking up points. But he’s very lucky as I said that he’s got a chairman who understands the game.

The verdict

Sheffield United’s and Nottingham Forest’s seasons last time out will act as a reminder that the start of the campaign is not the be all and end-all.

Once the current squad settles, Boro have the necessary ingredients to find success as the campaign progresses, with this two-week break likely to be a productive one for Wilder.

The Championship consistently throws out surprises but it should not be long before Boro start firing and start climbing the division.

As Palmer quite rightly says, Wilder encountered a number of problems during the summer, hindering his progress at the start of the season.
