Is there a more romantic team in Italy than Roma? Perhaps it’s a combination of their size and their relative lack of success to your Inters, your Milans, your Juves. In Serie A for all but one season of their existence, but only two post-war league titles to their name. Buut also their players: Totti, De Rossi, Batistuta, all of whom we profile with affection here. Enjoy…
Part one: Italian football’s mavericks. Part two: Serie A icons from the 1990s Part three: Inter – the Emperor, the choke and the tripleta Part four: Milan – Maldini, Super Pippo, Kaka and Bunga Bunga Part five: Juventus – Buffon, Del Piero, Moggi & Baggio
He’s a God in Rome. Would Francesco Totti have been more appreciated globally if he’d taken that move to Real Madrid? The first part of our special looks back on the first decade of his career, when he realised the dream of lifting the Scudetto with his hometown club.
Totti scored some of his most memorable goals in the twilight of his career before retiring at 40. But exiting centre stage for his hometown club Roma proved to be a slightly messy affair.
A Roma icon, midfield legend and World Cup winner – Daniele De Rossi. Immortalised in Italian pop culture and in the hearts of fans at the Stadio Olimpico, we examine a man of impeccable integrity and character. Brian McBride might tell you otherwise.
James Richardson and James Horncastle salute the genius of ‘Batigol’ whose stunning goals and flowing locks lit up Argentina and Italy. A hero at Fiorentina after 168 goals and staying on after relegation, Batistuta finally won a Scudetto after moving to Roma in his 30s.
The boy from Bari who loved football but probably not as much as he loved sex and sugar. Cassano packed more into his career than most – including heart surgery and over 700 women. Jimbo, James Horncastle and Gab Marcotti reminisce about a man who says if he made the most of his talent, he wouldn’t be on planet Earth right now.
Jimbo and James Horncastle take a trip down memory lane with the man who wrote the book on Ranieri – literally – Gab Marcotti. We look at Gentleman Claudio’s journey in Serie A. From how his Roma side took Jose Mourinho’s all-conquering Inter to the limit, to his engineering of the great escape at Parma, as well as helping restore Juve’s battered reputation.
Jimbo, James Horncastle and Gab Marcotti venture back to a time when Roma won the scudetto and embarked on their first ever European Cup campaign. Inspired by Swedish manager Nils Liedholm in the early 80s, the likes of Conti, Ancelotti and the original Falcao led the Giallorossi to the biggest game in club football, in their own stadium, against the mighty Liverpool. It’s a story involving bribery, Dundee United and ultimately a shocking tragedy.
AC Jimbo is joined by James Horncastle and Gabriele Marcotti to turn back the clock to May 1999 to relive a remarkable 5-4 win for Inter at Roma – a game featuring a who’s who of 90s football icons (and Mikaël Silvestre)
A contemporary(ish) Golazzo, as Jimbo and James Horncastle look back over the Giallorossi’s incredible 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the 2018 Champions League, and the euphoric celebrations which followed, as the team from the capital reached a European semi-final for the first time since 1984.
