Southampton welcomed Wolves to the St. Mary’s Stadium for Matchday 6 of the 2021/22 Premier League season on Sunday. The Saints had a decent game but lost to Wolves due to a second-half goal from Raul Jiminez. This was Wolves’ second win of the season and the victory took Wolves up to 14th in the Championship with six points from six games. After the home defeat to Wolves, the Saints are now down in 16th with just the four points from their six games.

Ralph HassenHuttl lined up Southampton in a 4-4-2 formation with Che Admas and Adam Armstrong playing as the two strikers. The midfield consisted of Nathan Redmond on the left wing, Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse in the centre and Mohamed Elyounoussi on the right wing. Alex McCarthy stated in goal behind a back four of left-back Kyle Walker-Peters, centre backs Karim Bednarek and Mohammed Salisu, and right-back Tino Livramento.
The average positions of the Southampton players show that they had advanced and forward positions on the pitch. Most of their players had their average position in the opposition half, showing their attacking intent and pressing from upfront.
Bruno Lage’s Wolves were lined up in a 3-4-3 formation with Jose Pedro Sa in goal behind the three centre-backs Romain said, Conor Coady and Max Kilman. Fernando Marcal started as the left wing-back, with Leande4r Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho in the central midfield, and Nelson Semedo at right wing-back. The front there included Hee-Chan Hwang on the left wing, Daniel Podence on the right and goal scorer Raul Jiminez as the central striker. The average positions of the wolves’ players show that they were focused on staying back and absorbing the pressure, waiting for the right moment to counterattack. The players had their average positions mostly around the halfway line.
It was a tight game between the Saints and Wolves, with the home team having an xG of 0.74 compared to the visitors’ 0.85. Southampton took a total of 14 shots in the game out of which six were on target, but were unable to find the back of the net. Wolves on the other hand had just five shots on goal with three on target but were able to get an all-important goal in the second half. Raul Jiminez had the highest individual xG in the match with 0.48, while Che Adams had the highest xG for the Saints. Elyounoussi had a total of four shots in the game, while Oriel Romeu had the highest number of passes into the final third with 16, while roman Saiss had the highest for Wolves with 12.
Southampton took a total of 14 shots in the game, and their shot map shows that most of these shots were taken from outside the box and from the left-hand side of the attack. They had a lower xG due to the long-range shots, and could not score a goal despite hitting the target six times. The visitors only took a total of five shots in the game, and all of them were taken from inside the penalty area. They were able to hit the target thrice in search of the only goal of the match.
The xT creation timeline of the match shows that the first have did not have much threat creation from both teams, except an early chance for Wolves. The second half saw both teams start well, but after wolves got the opening goal of the game, all threat was created by the home team. The xG timeline shows the increase of xG for both teams over the course of the 90 minutes. Southampton’s pass matrix shows that they had a lot of passes in the match to show for their 56% possession in the match. Oriel Romeu attempted the most passes for them with 85, followed by Ward-Prowse’s 73. Romeu also received the most passes for the saints with 65. The pass matrix for Wolves shows that they had a decent number of passes in their 44% possession in the match. Joao Moutinho attempted the most passes for the visitors with 57, while he also received the most passes with 41. Marechal and roman Saiss attempted 49 passes each as well while receiving 33 and 32 respectively. The passing zones of the home team showed that they had a large concentration of their total passes in the central midfield region of the pitch. Adam Armstrong made eight passes inside the opposition box, while Romeu made six. Walker-Peters and Elyounoussi both put in four crosses each.
The passing zones of Wolves show that they did most of their passing in the midfield and defence. They did not put in many crosses into the box, and Daniel Podence made the most passes inside the opposition box with six. The xT creation zones of the Saints showed that they created a lot of xT(expected threat) in many important and dangerous areas around the opposition’s 18-yard box. Karim Bednarek had the highest xT creation from passing for them. Other than Bednarek, Oriel Romeu and Adam Armstrong had decent xT creation from passing. Tino Livramento had the highest xT creation from successful dribbles, with Mohamed Elyounoussi also creating some xT. Wolves’ xT creation zones show that they did not create enough threat in the match, especially in and around the opposition penalty box, but they cannot complain being able to score the only goal to the match to win 1-0. Romain Saiss had the highest individual xT creation from passing for them. Other than Romain Saiss, Joao Moutinho also had high xT creation from his creativity and passing. Raul Jiminez had the highest xT creation from dribbling in the match in the absence of Adama Traore.
Southampton had to face a lot of defensive duels in the midfield and defence. They were able to win more than 60% of their defensive duels, with Bednarek, Ward-Prowse and Elyounoussi all winning three duels each for them.
There were a lot of aerial duels to be contested in the midfield, attack and defence during the match due to a lot of aerial passes being played. Bednarek won the most aerial duels for the Saints with four. There were only a few loose ball duels to contest in the match, most of them being on the right-wing or the central attacking area. the fresh legs of substitute Armando Broja were able to make a couple of loose ball recoveries towards the end of the match. Wolves had to contest a lot of defensive duels in the defensive areas with a few in midfield as well. They were able to win almost 50% of their duels with Nelson Semedo winning the most with five followed by Marcal, who won four. As mentioned earlier, there were a few aerial duels contested all over the field with a lot of them being in midfield. Max Kilman and Raul Jiminez both won three aerial duels each for them, followed by multiple players winning a couple each.
Wolverhampton Wanderers were able to make a lot of loose ball recoveries, especially in the midfield and defensive areas of the field. Marcal made four loose ball recoveries for the visitors, followed by goal scorer Raul Jiminez, who won three.
Wolves will be delighted to see their striker Jiminez back on the scoresheet after returning from injury. They have missed him in the early part of the season due to their lack of goals but now have moved up to 14th with this victory. Bruno Lage will hope to climb further up in the standings in the coming weeks. Southampton have slipped down to 16th in the standings, and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will consider this a poor performance. He will hope to get better results in the near future if he wants to stay away from the relegation battle this season.
