Chelsea fans who regularly attend Stamford Bridge have been excited about the redevelopment of the West Upper stand, but the new prices for seats announced today have shocked everyone.
A prime, halfway line “Tier 1” seat in the West currently costs around £1,250 – a frankly insane price already for 90 minutes of action 19 times a season.
Those tickets will now treble to £3,900 for a season
. That initial price already ruled out all but the super rich, the new price rules out all but an even more exclusive strata of the ultra-wealthy. We can’t see many of them joining in on a “Zigga Zagga”, let’s put it that way.
The new part of the stand has been given the preposterous name “Westview” as though it’s a Thamesside housing development, and Chelsea justified the prices with the following statement:
“There are two new 360-degree bars with faster service and a new food hall serving an expanded range of high-quality food.
“In the seating bowl we’ve introduced three big screens to ensure all seat locations can view the screen content for the first time, and all seats have been replaced with new padded seating.
“When the changes were communicated before the start of this season, we explained that a new pricing model for Westview would be implemented for the 2022/23 season.
“To give you plenty of time to review your options, we are now writing to let you know how this pricing model will be structured.”
So if you want a comfortable chair, and a big screen to watch Yokohama adverts on, you’re going to have to pay out richly for it…
We think we’ll stick in the Shed, thanks.
