Chelsea are unlikely to sign a new centre back before the end of the window, and there are three reasons for that according to The Athletic.
The Blues were rocked by the news Levi Colwill would miss the majority of the season with an ACL injury suffered in their first training session back after the Club World Cup.
Colwill is vital to how Enzo Maresca likes to play, and the Blues don’t have many within the squad who can play the central centre back role like him.
Chelsea now face a difficult decision of whether to trust their existing options or go into the market at this late stage for a replacement.
Enzo Maresca has publicly stated he wants Chelsea to sign a new centre back, and to add further bad news Tosin Adarabioyo is set to miss Sunday’s opening game against Crystal Palace.

The Blues aren’t short of numbers at centre back, but two of their options in Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana have shown recently they can’t keep themselves fit for a prolonged period.
There’s likely to be increased opportunities for Josh Acheampong, but it will be interesting if Chelsea decide to back Maresca on this situation.
However, it appears he may have to make do with the current options, and The Athletic have reported three reasons why the Blues won’t sign another centre back.
The reports states those reasons as confidence in the squad depth, a lack of suitable options available this window and full faith in Maresca to work with and improve the players at his disposal.
One of those players is Acheampong, who was promoted to the first team squad last season, and is regarded very highly at Chelsea.

The teenager can expect to feature more regularly this season, but whether he’ll get the game time for his development remains to be seen.
Maresca has stated he wants him to stay, but Acheampong has attracted interest from Bournemouth and Manchester City.
