Chelsea are open to the possibility of signing a midfield player before the end of the window if the deal is right according to The Athletic.

The Blues have had a quieter month than expected, although with the window now in the final two weeks this is where things start to pick up.

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg in deal worth up to €15m, with the 19-year-old set to join in the summer, whilst Trevoh Chalobah has been recalled from his loan at Crystal Palace.

Chelsea could sign a midfielder if the deal is right

Enzo Maresca is looking to strengthen in the forward areas, with the Blues needing a striker to compete with Nicolas Jackson, but there now also appears to be a problem in midfield.

Chelsea currently have just two fit midfielders in Moises Caicedo and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who started his first league game of the season on Monday night against Wolves.

Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia both missed missed the win against Wolves, and whilst Laiva is expected to be out for weeks, Fernandez is expected to return to action quickly.

Chelsea have been assessing whether to recall Lesley Ugochukwu from Southampton, but it’s believed that’s now unlikely given his increased playing time under Ivan Juric.

The Blues are certainly light in midfield given the injuries and the fact Cesare Casadei and Careny Chukwuemeka are set to leave this month.

However, despite having the option to recall Ugochukwu, The Athletic have reported Chelsea are open to the idea of signing a midfielder before the window closes.

The report adds this includes possibly signing a player on loan for the rest of the season, but it would need to be the right player and for the finances to make sense for any deal to happen.

The Athletic also state if a midfielder doesn’t arrive this window it’s a position being looked at for the summer, like with a striker and right footed winger.

If Chelsea don’t sign a midfielder this window it feels like the club are taking a huge gamble and one which could cost them Champions League football.
