The 5 QPR players likely to never play for the club again

Queens Park Rangers achieved their goal of securing their Championship safety with a thrilling 4-0 win over Leeds United last Friday.

It was a memorable night for the R’s, and it highlighted the outstanding work that Marti Cifuentes has done since he was named as Gareth Ainsworth's successor back in October.

The Spaniard inherited a club in a mess, with the team in the relegation zone and six points from safety, whilst the fans had understandably become disillusioned with the regime.

Yet, Cifuentes has managed to get everyone pulling in the same direction, as his coaching ability improved individuals, and there is a togetherness around the club that had been missing.

Now, attention will turn to next season, and there is real optimism and excitement around Loftus Road about how the future could look under the ex-Hammarby chief.

However, there’s still a lot of hard work to do this summer, as QPR aren’t exactly in a position to splash the cash, and there are doubts about the future of several key members of the squad.

And, here we look at FIVE players who could be shipped out, meaning they have played their last game in the blue-and-white hoops…

1 Asmir Begovic

Experienced goalkeeper Asmir Begovic hasn’t always convinced this season, but his leadership, and some crucial saves, have played a big part in ensuring the R’s remain in the second tier.

But, with his contract expiring, now feels like the right time for an exit, enabling some space in the squad, and freeing up wages, for Cifuentes to bring in his own keeper.

The style of play may evolve next season, and a number one who is better on the ball could be key to that. Plus, Begovic is not a long-term option at 36, so now QPR can sign someone who will be in place for the years to come.

2 Osman Kakay

Right-back Osman Kakay is also out of contract in the summer, and he is certain to be moving on after falling out of favour under Cifuentes.

The academy graduate, who has been with the R's since he was a kid, hasn't featured since Boxing Day, and it's telling that the boss has put Jimmy Dunne, a centre-back by trade, in that role, as Reggie Cannon is on the bench.

Kakay hasn't even been making the bench in recent months, so he will be desperate for a fresh start elsewhere as he tries to get his career going, and an exit will appear to suit all parties.

3 Chris Willock

This isn’t one that QPR will want to happen, but Chris Willock is out of contract in the summer. Therefore, the winger’s next move is entirely in his own hands, and it has already been suggested that Sunderland are tracking the player.

The R’s may try to agree a new deal with Willock, but he is going to be an attractive option for many clubs out there on a free, and the reality is that he may get better financial offers elsewhere.

So, it’s one to monitor, and Willock is going to have a big call to make in the coming weeks.

4 Albert Adomah

Another who is out of contract is Albert Adomah, and from a football perspective, it makes total sense for the 36-year-old to depart, as he has struggled for minutes and is no longer the attacking threat he once was.

Nevertheless, it will still be a shame for all connected to the R’s that Adomah is sure to leave, as he is a lifelong QPR fan, and you can see what pulling on the shirt has meant to him in the past four years.

What happens next in Adomah’s career remains to be seen, but he will be proud to have had the chance to feature for a club that is so close to his heart.

5 Lyndon Dykes

Unlike the other players on the list, Lyndon Dykes isn’t out of contract in the summer, but there’s still every chance he could be on the move.

The target man has come good for QPR in the past few games, but that doesn’t change the fact he hasn’t been prolific this season, and his performances have been inconsistent.

You would imagine that bringing in a new number nine is a priority for Cifuentes this summer, so Dykes may fancy a change as he may no longer be a regular.

A productive Euro 2024 with Scotland could raise Dykes’ profile, and he may fetch a decent sum that Cifuentes can reinvest into the team.
