Two goals up and playing 11 versus 10, Erik ten Hag’s Bayer Leverkusen looked to be cruising towards victory over Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion.

But the Green-Whites refused to fold, salvaging a dramatic point with a stoppage-time equaliser as the match finished 3-3.

Determined to bounce back from their opening 1-2 defeat to Hoffenheim, Leverkusen struck early when Patrik Schick netted after just five minutes.

New signing Malik Tillman then doubled the lead on his debut in the 35th minute, before Romano Schmid pulled one back from the penalty spot just before half-time.

The second half seemed to tilt firmly in Leverkusen’s favour when Niklas Stark was shown a second yellow for a clumsy foul in the box. Schick converted the resulting penalty to restore a two-goal cushion at 3-1 in the 63rd minute.

Bremen, however, would not lie down. In the 67th minute, debutant Isaac Schmidt punished a disastrous misjudgment from Mark Flekken, racing past the keeper caught far off his line before rolling the ball into the vacant net.

Leverkusen held on as long as they could, but in the final moments Karim Coulibaly, making his first start, pounced on a rebound to deliver Bremen’s dramatic equaliser and seal a remarkable comeback.
