Liverpool look set to announce the appointment of Arne Slot as successor to Jurgen Klopp in the next few hours.

The 45-year-old has agreed to move to Anfield from Feyenoord with negotiations taking place between the clubs through the weekend.

Slot last week won the KNVB Beker (Dutch cup) to go alongside the Eredivisie title he won with the Rotterdam side last season.

The ex-midfielder is also a two-time Dutch coach of the year, coming out successful after Liverpool conducted an extensive search for a new coach.

It was believed that Xabi Alonso was initially the Reds’ first choice but he opted to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, who have just won the Bundesliga.

Also linked was Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim, whose ill-advised trip to London in order to discuss the West Ham job appeared to finally rule him out of the running this week.

Events moved quickly from there with Slot confirming on Thursday that he wanted the Liverpool move and he expected it to happen soon.

The appointment has not impressed everyone with a trio of Liverpool European champions admitting their doubts over the deal.

Reds legends query Slot appointment

Jamie Carragher is worried Liverpool might have got a ‘Yes Man’ with the club moving towards a less traditional British football set up.

Graeme Souness, meanwhile, thinks it’s a big step up and is concerned Slot may end up regretting moving to Anfield.

And Steve Nicol gave the most damning assessment of all, boldly stating that Slot didn’t have the CV of a Liverpool manager.

Ex-Sky Sports anchor Richard Keys agrees, stating that he would be ‘disappointed’ in the appointment if he were a Liverpool fan.

An avowed critic of Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, Keys took aim at his compatriot Slot, fearing he could be ‘Ten Hag in disguise’.

Slot is 'Ten Hag in disguise'

The ex-Ajax boss could leave Old Trafford at the end of the season following a dismal campaign. United have no chance of qualifying for the Champions League and slipped out of this season’s edition of the competition at the group stage.

“I’m trying to put myself in the shoes of Liverpool fans,” Keys said on beIN SPORTS.

“I’m excited? I’m not surprised? Yes. I’m disappointed if I’m honest, really.

“I couldn’t give you the name of any Dutch coach who has yet succeeded in our league. There have been one or two, like [Guus] Hiddink or [Louis] van Gaal and Ruud Gullit, who have had limited success, but no one over a period of time has had sustained success.

“I think it’s Erik ten Hag in disguise.”
