The Lionesses will travel to Zurich to take on Nils Nielsen’s side on Thursday 30 June 2022, seven days before the start of the home EUROs.
The Football Association informed FAWSL Full-Time of the news via an official press release this morning. The match will be the third of three pre-tournament warm-ups for the Lionesses with Sarina Wiegman’s side also scheduled to face Belgium in Wolverhampton on Thursday 16 June 2022 and the Netherlands in Leeds on Friday 24 June 2022.
While England will begin their UEFA Women’s EURO in Group A alongside Austria, Norway and Northern Ireland, Switzerland are one of the four teams in Group C. Nielsen’s side will compete against the Netherlands, Sweden and one other nation which yet is to be confirmed. Switzerland ended their qualification campaign as runners-up to Belgium before seeing off the Czech Republic in their play-off.
Following this morning’s announcement, England boss Wiegman said “I am very happy to be finishing our EURO build-up with another big game, this time away in Switzerland. Before the match, it will be helpful to spend some time abroad as we step up our work on the training ground. The change of environment will come at just the right time for the squad and help focus our minds on the challenges to come.
“We will then return to England refreshed and ready to go for the opening EURO match and I am delighted to see how excited everyone already is for the summer. Before Switzerland, we hope the fans will turn out to see us in Wolverhampton and Leeds, especially with our group games sold out. We certainly can’t wait to feel their support once again.”
