Swansea City getting Mykola Kukharevych and Nathan Tjoe-A-On off their books could be significant

Swansea City's summer transfer window has got off to a flyer, and while recent signings understandably have supporters excited, news of some departures have also been a timely boost.

Last week, Swansea announced that 2023 summer signings Mykola Kukharevych and Nathan Tjoe-A-On would depart the club, with striker Kukharevych departing for Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava for an undisclosed fee, while left-back Tjoe-A-On had the last year of his contract terminated.

It's fair to say that neither player had the desired impact in SA1, and getting fringe players like Kukharevych and Tjoe-A-On off their books will be a huge relief to the Swans' hierarchy, with both players highly unlikely to feature this coming season.

With both players set to be contracted at the Swansea.com Stadium until the summer of 2026, it's evident that Swansea's Director of Football, Richard Montague, has been working hard behind the scenes this summer to ensure their exits, and news of both players' departures will be music to the ears of the Jack Army.

Mykola Kukharevych and Nathan Tjoe-A-On endured tough times at Swansea City

Neither player would have been a familiar name to Swansea City supporters prior to their arrival at the club in 2023, but with plenty of experience under their belt at a young age, there was hope that the pair could become big players in the years to come.

However, both struggled for regular playing time and spent time out on loan during their two-year stay in South Wales, with Kukharevych spending the 2024/25 campaign on loan with Hibernian in Scotland, while Tjoe-A-On spent the second part of the 2023/24 campaign with Heerenveen.

In hindsight, it was clear that neither player was ready for Championship football when they signed for the club under Michael Duff and Paul Watson in the fateful summer transfer window of 2023, and they leave Swansea with just 16 appearances between them.

Tjoe-A-On made just three appearances for Swansea after joining from Excelsior Rotterdam, all coming in August 2024 with two of those coming in the Carabao Cup, and Kukharevych failed to start any of his 13 appearances, his last minutes in a Swans shirt coming in February 2024.

The former Troyes striker scored just once in his 13 Swansea appearances, and while he scored seven goals in 28 appearances for Hibernian during the 2024/25 campaign, the club have decided to cut their losses on the 23-year-old.

Both players will be glad that their spell at Swansea has come to an end, and an early exit from their three-year contract suits all parties.

Swansea City will be relieved they're undoing the mistakes of 2023 transfer window

Plenty of Swansea fans feared that they would be stuck with Kukharevych and Tjoe-A-On for another season until their contracts expired, so news of their departures was a welcome surprise, and shows that the club have started to undo the mistakes of previous transfer windows.

The summer transfer window of 2023 saw the likes of Kristian Pedersen and Jerry Yates brought to the club alongside Kukharevych and Tjoe-A-On, and with three of those players off their books, Swansea should be looking to get rid of Yates next.

Director of Football Montague has started to undo the work of his predecessor Watson, and getting Tjoe-A-On and Kukharevych off their books will save an estimated £7,000 a week, as per Capology, not a huge amount, but it's money that could be put towards new signings who will actually feature.

Swansea have made a hugely positive start to the transfer window with a number of new signings already confirmed, but moving on fringe players is just as positive and shows that the club have learned their lessons from the past and the future could well be bright.
