Huddersfield Town are closing in on the marquee signing of Alfie May after agreeing a deal with Birmingham City, Football League World has learned

Huddersfield are set to complete their tenth signing of the summer transfer window in the form of Alfie May after agreeing an eight-figure deal with Birmingham City, sources have exclusively revealed to Football League World.

The Terriers are undertaking squad upheaval following last season's disappointing 10th-placed finish and the subsequent appointment of former Ipswich Town first-team coach Lee Grant, who has brought a clutch of fresh faces with him to the Accu Stadium since being appointed at the helm back in May.

At the end of the previous season, Huddersfield opted to release nine senior players, while Brodie Spencer and Sorba Thomas were sold to Oxford United and Stoke City respectively.

It has been an extremely active summer for the Terriers, who have completed deals for defensive duo Joe Low and Sean Roughan - two deals which were first called by FLW last month, alongside the additions of Josh Feeney, Owen Goodman, Marcus Harness, Ryan Ledson, Murray Wallace, Jack Whatmough and, most recently, former Sunderland and Stoke City wide-man Lynden Gooch - the latter of which FLW also exclusively reported.

The League One promotion hopefuls are now poised to make it ten signings and counting as the season opener at home to last term's play-off finalists Leyton Orient on Saturday, August 2, edges closer.

Huddersfield Town set to sign Birmingham City's Alfie May

FLW has been informed that May is on the verge of becoming a Huddersfield player after Grant's side agreed a £1.2 million deal with Birmingham.

The Blues striker is now expected to sign for Huddersfield imminently, and FLW understands that 32-year-old May is set to undergo a medical in West Yorkshire today in order to complete the move.

May, of course, snubbed Huddersfield in favour of a move to Birmingham from Charlton Athletic this time last year, with the forward admitting that he was "very close" to joining Town.

Blues, however, proved the more attractive destination for May at that moment in time and landed his services in a reported £750,000 move, with his goals helping Chris Davies' side to an EFL and world-record haul of 111 points as they lifted the 2024/25 League One title in style.

May registered 17 goals and nine assists from 57 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign in the Second City, although just 27 of his 44 league outings were starts as he was often used in a squad rotation role, even filling in on the left-hand side of attack on a number of occasions.

The ex-Charlton star will bring impressive goalscoring pedigree to Huddersfield's ranks, having surpassed the 20-goal mark for league strikes in each of his previous three campaigns before moving to Birmingham last summer.

However, with Blues having completed the statement signing of Kyogo Furuhashi from Rennes ahead of a hopeful push for promotion to the Premier League, May has only fallen further down the pecking order, and it's perhaps no real surprise to see him closing in on a departure despite enjoying a productive opening season with the club.

Birmingham City's Alfie May could be Huddersfield Town's most important addition yet

Recruiting a first-rate marksman to lead the line this season was always a significant task facing Grant, and it will have been one looming over his head even after brokering eye-catching deals for the likes of Harness, Goodman, Gooch and Low.

May, though, is exactly the striker Huddersfield have needed to amply address their problems in that area of the pitch, which them average just 1.3 goals per match - the league's 14th-best return - last season. Rhys Healey simply has not been able to maintain fitness, Bojan Radulovic is still yet to spark his Huddersfield career into life, whereas Freddie Ladapo and Dion Charles remain in search of their first league goals for the Terriers - with the latter joining from Bolton Wanderers back in January.

Much will be expected of Joe Taylor ahead of his first full season with the club after making the hotly-anticipated move from Luton Town earlier this year, too, but Huddersfield have needed more depth and quality up top and that will be delivered in abundance by May.

A seasoned and clinical League One goalscorer, May's record at this level speaks volumes and he will be expected to hit the ground running quickly as Huddersfield look to return to the Championship at the second time of asking.
