Charlie Cresswell’s season so far

It’s been a difficult campaign for the Whites centre-back, who had hoped to establish himself as a regular after their relegation, and his promising loan spell at Millwall last season.

However, Cresswell has managed just five league appearances, as Daniel Farke went with Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper ahead of the academy graduate earlier this season.

More recently, Ethan Ampadu has partnered Welsh teammate Rodon in defence due to the injury situation, and the duo have been outstanding, helping the side to the top of the table.

Therefore, Cresswell has continued to watch on, and he is unlikely to play much of a role during the run-in, unless Farke’s squad is hit by injuries.

Charlie Cresswell was on AC Milan’s radar

Given his situation, there was plenty of speculation surrounding the future of the 21-year-old in the summer window.

Furthermore, Farke even admitted that Cresswell was not ‘mentally ready’ to play for Leeds in January, as he faced an uncertain future.

The likes of Middlesbrough, Ipswich and Blackburn were linked with the youngster heading into the winter window, but, as it transpires, nothing materialised for Cresswell, who remains at Elland Road.

And, in a surprising twist, the Mirror has revealed that AC Milan had kept tabs on Creswell, and they made a move to sign the England U21 international on deadline-day, but nothing was sorted between the clubs.

Charlie Cresswell’s future

The prospect of joining the Italian giants would surely have appealed to Cresswell, even if he would’ve known that he would need to be patient to get near the first XI. But, that shows the talent he has, and just how well regarded Cresswell is within the game.

Whether AC Milan reignite their interest in Cresswell remains to be seen, but it would appear highly likely that the defender will be on the move in the summer window.

It’s clear that he isn’t going to get the opportunities he wants at Leeds, and Farke’s decision has ultimately paid off when you look at Leeds’ record.

So, a move, whether it’s a loan or a permanent switch, would suit all parties ahead of next season, and it’s really what Cresswell needs to get his career going. From Leeds’ perspective, it would also make sense to get a fee for the player this summer, or to send him out on loan where he can increase his value.

Cresswell is under contract with Leeds until the summer of 2027, so the Yorkshire outfit are under no pressure to accept a poor deal on their behalf.

The immediate concern for Cresswell and all connected to Leeds is ensuring the club win promotion back to the Premier League.

If they do win promotion or not, it’s sure to be a busy summer for Leeds, and Cresswell’s future is something that will need to be addressed.
