Jimmy Dunne has signed a new deal with Queens Park Rangers following heavy links with a move to Sheffield United.

The Blades wanted to sign him in January, as Football League World exclusively reported, and they were keen on signing the free agent this summer before he committed his future to Loftus Road.

The length of his new deal with the R's is currently unknown.

Dunne admitted in his interview with the club, after agreeing to the terms they had offered him, that the speculation did have an effect on him, but he reiterated that he felt that QPR was the best place for him to be going forward.

The news of his new contract came as a shock to FLW's R's fan pundit, Louis Moir, who has been really pleased with the moves that the west London club have made so far this summer.

Sam Field has also put pen to paper on a new deal and Julien Stephan is set to become the club's new boss in the near future.

Moir thinks the Irish defender's commitment to the club is a great sign for them going forward. "I'm kind of surprised that Jimmy Dunne signed a new deal," said the fan pundit.

"I think the longer it went on I just thought it wasn't going to happen, but I'm absolutely delighted with the news.

"We haven't had a player like him in years, really, that has sort of genuinely loved and cared for the club. It's clear to see and obviously anyone who doesn't think that really just needs to go and watch his interview after the contract extension was announced and just hear some of the things he said. It's just brilliant.

"Most importantly, for us to have a player of his quality is, you know, not just because he's loved by the fans and he loves playing for the club, but he was arguably the best right back in the Championship last season.

"He's a threat in both boxes. He honestly had an impeccable season last year and you could see why clubs like Sheffield United and sort of bigger clubs in the league were interested in him.

"But obviously he's decided to stay with us and it's just brilliant, brilliant news. Because we've got him tied down, we don't need to necessarily put as much effort into sorting that right back problem out that we thought we were going to deal with.

"Obviously we probably will still need a cover, and depending on the new manager and his ideas potentially might want to play a back five with wing-backs, and Jimmy Dunne might play in the right side of a three. You never know, that could be an option.

"It's going to be interesting to see if he's going to have as much impact as he did last season under the new manager and new coaching ideas. But I think for everyone involved in the club, to have him tied down just shows what we're sort of all about and the direction we're going in and the continuous correct decisions that our CEO is making.

"He's doing everything right, getting the right players tied down. It's exciting times and you can really see with that news, it's given everyone a buzz, and for me even more so.

"I'm already excited for the season coming up, but when you've got players like Jimmy Dunne and Sam Field and probably a few others to come as well who are sort of confident in the club's direction, it's such a positive thing to look at now that we are in the right place and we're going to hopefully go and do things.

"But, yeah, Jimmy Dunne staying is just brilliant. Absolutely brilliant for us."

Jimmy Dunne's Sheffield United risk

Unless Stephan comes in and pulls off a minor miracle, and Ruben Selles totally flops at Bramall Lane, the chances are that Dunne would have been better off next season with the Blades if league position and pyramid progression were all that was on his mind.

But clearly Dunne's bigger-picture vision includes more than just a potential opportunity to play in the Premier League. His connection with QPR is strong and it was one that he felt he couldn't break.

That doesn't mean that it will end up being the right move for him.

With the way that United want to go with their new owners, a chance to establish himself at one of the Championship's top sides was a possibility for the 27-year-old.

There is a chance that this decision will come back to bite him if the Blades go on to great success with Selles, and QPR continue to sit just above, or even fall into, the relegation zone.
