Kyoto Sanga maintained their position at the top of the J1 League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Yokohama FC at Sanga Stadium on Friday evening.
The hosts secured their third consecutive win thanks to goals from Taichi Hara and Masaya Okugawa, with Lukian briefly levelling for the visitors early in the second half.
Cho Kwi-Jae's side have been the surprise package of the season, and this latest victory keeps them at the summit – a remarkable achievement for a club that struggled in the previous campaign.
After weathering early pressure from Yokohama, Kyoto took the lead in the 15th minute when Taichi Hara netted his first goal of the season. The forward, who has already contributed four assists this term, timed his run perfectly to break the deadlock.
The hosts made three changes from their previous outing, with goalkeeper Gakuji Ota returning alongside Sota Kawasaki and Hidehiro Sugai, while Yokohama manager Shuhei Yomoda kept faith with the same starting eleven.
Yokohama emerged with renewed purpose after the interval and equalised just four minutes into the second half through Lukian. The forward, who has been tasked with filling the void left by the injured João Paulo, finished clinically to silence the home crowd.
However, Kyoto's response was emphatic. Substitute Masaya Okugawa continued his impressive form by scoring in his second consecutive match, restoring Kyoto's lead in the 70th minute following excellent work from Hidehiro Sugai on the right flank.
"The confidence gained from overcoming last year's difficult period is carrying into this season," said Cho post-match, acknowledging the transformation in his team's fortunes.
Rafael Elias, who has been Kyoto's standout performer with eight goals and four assists in 13 matches, was once again influential despite not adding to his impressive tally.
For Yokohama FC, this result extends their winless run to three matches, leaving them languishing in 15th position with just three wins from 12 games.
The absence of Brazilian forward João Paulo, who is back in his homeland recovering from a left tibia stress fracture, continues to hamper their attacking potency. To compound their problems, Towa Yamane was forced off with an injury during the match.
Despite Lukian's goal and the efforts of Kota Yamada, Yokohama's lack of cutting edge remains a significant concern for Yomoda's side as they prepare to host Kashima Antlers next weekend.
Kyoto will look to extend their impressive run when they travel to face Gamba Osaka at Panasonic Stadium Suita in their next fixture, while Yokohama return home to welcome Kashima Antlers to NHK Spring Mitsuzawa Football Stadium.
