Despite being without a manager, Sunderland can't afford to fall behind their Championship rivals when it comes to summer business, and the club's hierarchy will be busy preparing for the upcoming transfer window.

The Black Cats endured a difficult 2023/24 season, finishing 16th in the Championship, and the club will certainly be looking to avoid another repeat of that next season.

A good transfer window is crucial when it comes to laying the foundations for a good season, and they'll be looking to avoid the same mistakes as last season, where a number of players failed to live up to expectations.

With that in mind, here is all of the latest Sunderland transfer news...

Manchester United set to make summer move for Chris Rigg

Manchester United are said to be keen on a move for Sunderland youngster Chris Rigg, according to The Northern Echo.

The 16-year-old is yet to sign a professional deal at the Stadium of Light, with players having to turn 17 before being able to do so - Rigg turns 17 on the 18th June.

With Manchester United set to overhaul their academy set-up following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's takeover, Rigg is of interest to the club, and it's reported that they are poised to make the strongest move for him.

Rigg featured 21 times in the Championship for Sunderland this season, and the Black Cats are hopeful that their ability to offer him regular football next season will enable them to keep hold of him.

Sheffield United interested in Anthony Patterson

Following their relegation from the Premier League, Sheffield United are interested in a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, as they look to sign a new first choice goalkeeper.

Chris Wilder's side are reportedly willing to pay just £8million for the 24-year-old, which will perhaps disappoint Sunderland supporters, particularly as he's contracted to the club for another four years.

This isn't the first time Patterson has been linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light, and Liverpool and Arsenal were both linked with him earlier in the season.

It remains to be seen whether Patterson will be a Sunderland player next season, but you'd have thought they'd demand far more than the £8million Sheffield United want to pay.

Sunderland considering deal for Bundesliga youngster

Former RB Leipzig captain Elias Lenz has been training with Sunderland after being released by the German club, according to German outfit Bild.

Lenz has been one of the casualties after the club had a mass clear out of their young players, with 11 players being released from the club's u19 side.

However, Leipzig's loss could be Sunderland's gain, and the player had the chance to impress Sunderland's hierarchy during his time training with the club.

It's well-documented that Sunderland's recruit policy seems them sign young, promising players, before attempting to develop them into players they can sell for large fees in the future.

It remains to be seen if Lenz has done enough to earn a deal, but he could be a low-risk, high-reward signing for the Black Cats this summer.

Nazariy Rusyn attracting interest from Ukraine

Sunderland striker Nazariy Rusyn is reportedly attracting interest from his homeland of Ukraine, according to SportArena.

Newly-promoted side Karparty Lviv are said to be keen on a move for the striker who hasn't really hit the heights expected from him at the Stadium of Light this summer.

Any deal for the striker to join the Lviv-based side would see Rusyn leave on loan initially, with an obligation to buy the player.

The 25-year-old has been the best out of a bad bunch when it comes to Sunderland's strikers this season, but after scoring just 2 goals in 21 Championship games, it remains to be seen if the club would be willing to let Rusyn move on this summer.
