Sunderland have brought in their first January reinforcement!

After being released by Norwegian side Sarpsborg 08 FF after just nine games, Sunderland have signed 75-time Northern Ireland international Kyle Lafferty to a short-term contract.

Lafferty, a long-time Rangers hitman who also has well over 100 Championship matches under his belt, returns to England for the first time since summer 2017.

“I’m pleased to welcome Kyle to the club and I’m really looking forward to working with him,” manager Phil Parkinson said.

“He’s an experienced striker who provides us with another option in the final third. He adds competition for places at the top end of the pitch, which is something I felt we needed.”

Having not played in over a month nor having practiced with the first-team, Lafferty is doubtful to be included for Sunderland’s duel with first-place Wycombe on Saturday.
