Backed by a huge travelling support from the north east, it was the Black Cats who struck first after 12 minutes through Elliot Embleton.

He picked up the ball on the halfway line and drove forward unchallenged before unleashing a strike from the edge of the area which wrongfooted goalkeeper David Stockdale and found the net.

Ross Stewart twice went close before the break to adding to that lead in what was an impressive and assured showing from Alex Neil’s men.

But it was Stewart who did ultimately get the goal that settled all nerves and sent Sunderland on their way back up when Alex Pritchard picked him out just inside the area to steer a low finish into the corner and end their years in the lower league wilderness.
