However, the midfielder was forced off just ten minutes into his side’s 2-0 win over local rivals Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, with a clear fitness issue.

Now it seems as though that problem, is something that will keep the 32-year-old out of action for some time to come.

Providing an update on Evans’ fitness, Sunderland have revealed that the midfielder suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in that win at the weekend.

As a result, the midfielder is now due to have surgey on the injury, which is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.

That is something that could leave Evans facing an uncertain future at the club, with his current contract set to expire in the summer.

The Verdict

This does feel like a major blow for everyone involved here.

Evans has been an outstanding player for Sunderland this season, both with his influence that comes from his own performances in the centre of the park, and the leadership he provides in a young side.

As a result, his absence for such an extended period of time, feels like it will be a big loss for Tony Mowbray’s side as they chase a top six spot.

With that in mind, it does feel as though heading into the transfer market in order to find a replacement for Evans, is well worth considering for Sunderland.
