George Honeyman is set to miss the Checkatrade Trophy final through suspension unless Sunderland lodge a successful appeal against the captain’s three match ban.
Honeyman was shown a straight red card for his role in a touchline fracas deep into stoppage time of the Black Cats’ 1-1 draw at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
Due to the fact Sunderland have had three or more players called up for international duty later this month, their League One clash with Fleetwood Town has been re-arranged and will now take place on 30 April.
The Fleetwood game was supposed to be one of the three Honeyman would be banned for but instead, he will now miss Tuesday’s trip to Barnsley, next weekend’s meeting with Walsall and the Checkatrade Trophy final against Portsmouth at the end of March.
Sunderland boss Jack Ross is reportedly currently deciding whether or not to lodge an appeal against the midfielder’s red card.
Ross’s side needed a 94th minute Duncan Watmore equaliser to rescue a point from Saturday’s bruising encounter at Adams Park.
The result leaves them third in League One and four points behind second-placed Barnsley with a game in hand.
