The game got off to a flying start with a VAR check on a potential penalty for Dortmund after just five minutes.

Serhou Guirassy had his first sight of goal in the 24th minute, heading wide from a Maximilian Mittelstädt cross.

Dortmund’s best chance fell to Karim Adeyemi but Alexander Nübel made an excellent save to stop him from close range.

The second half was just as tight but Stuttgart broke the deadlock just after the hour through their most reliable source. Guirassy played the ball out wide to Leweling before having it played back to him in the box.

He hit it first time past Gregor Kobel for his 24th Bundesliga goal of the season – matching Mario Gomez’s tally from the 2008/09 season, the most for a Stuttgart player in the top division.

Nico Schlotterbeck missed Dortmund’s best chance, somehow missing from about a yard out after Nübel saved Jadon Sancho’s header from a corner.

Stuttgart could have scored another but held out for a massive win in the fight for Champions League qualification. On the other end, Dortmund drop into fifth and face a real fight to make top four.
