Manager Edin Terzić made 10 changes from his side’s Champions League semi-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain and, well, Mainz took full advantage of it.

The hosts are fighting for survival in the Bundesliga and knew three points against fifth-place Dortmund would be massive.

Right from kick-off, Mainz looked a step above Dortmund slamming home three goals within 23 minutes. It could’ve been more, too, as they hit the woodwork twice.

Leandro Barreiro struck from the top of the box before Lee Jae-sung secured a quick-fire brace (the first of which was a gift after goalkeeper Alexander Meyer kicked the ball straight to him).

Coming out after the break, Terzić brought on the big guns immediately in Jadon Sancho, Julian Brandt and Ian Maatsen. However, the visitors couldn’t turn things around in front of a raucous Mainz crowd.

The changes allowed Dortmund to shift possession of the ball in their favour (70%) but the damage had already been done.

Youssoufa Moukoko thought he pulled one back but the goal was ruled offside, summing up a troublesome night for the visitors ahead of the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Looking at the Bundesliga table Dortmund sit fifth and will face Darmstadt on the final day of the season.

Mainz, meanwhile, leapfrogged Union Berlin into 15th and face Wolfsburg on the final day with a two-point cushion.
