Former Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge has echoed the growing sentiment that the club must prioritise securing Trent Alexander-Arnold’s long-term future at the club.
Alexander-Arnold’s contract expires in 2025, and Real Madrid are eyeing a swoop for the Merseyside-born star.
Sturridge believes the 25-year-old is irreplaceable and has urged Liverpool to tie him to a new deal.
“That’s a tough one becasue I think all the top clubs around Europe are going to be sniffing around,” Sturridge declared on Sky Sports.
“Liverpool have got to do everything to get him to sign on the dotted line because you can’t lose him. He is from the city. We are talking about Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard, who have represented one club.
“I think that is kind of what you want for Trent. Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk – they have been absolutely world-class for the club. But the local lad, Trent, who has become a superstar – you don’t want to lose him.”
Alexander-Arnold’s future hangs in the balance as he enters the final year of his contract. Incoming manager Arne Slot will have a say, but the club should be doing everything to keep him.
His importance goes beyond his local ties. Alexander-Arnold has recorded three goals and 15 big chances created for the Reds in 26 Premier League appearances this term. He is one of only four defenders with 70+ G/A in Premier League history.
In his 308 appearances for Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold has bagged 15 goals and 81 assists, helping the club to clinch every available title.
Despite his defensive frailties, Alexander Arnold has been a cornerstone of this Liverpool side, and they cannot afford to lose him.
The club cannot afford to be complacent. Ideally, Alexander-Arnold will choose to continue his legacy at Anfield. However, he may decide to move on after achieving everything possible with his boyhood club.
In this case, the club must cash in this summer to avoid him leaving as a free agent in 2025.
