L’Équipe understands that RC Strasbourg Alsace gained a lead in the race to sign soon-to-be free agent CJ Egan-Riley (22) over clubs like Brentford, Brighton, and West Ham in January when they made contact with the Burnley player.

The French outlet explains that Le Racing offered a five-year contract to the defender (who can also play in midfield) with a significant signing-on bonus. He reportedly is tempted by the project in the East of France, especially with the club expected to lose some key players in defence over the summer.

It was first revealed by TBR Sports that Strasbourg were close to finalising a deal with Egan-Riley, who is out of contract at the end of the season, after he was recommended to the side by sister-club Chelsea.

Strasbourg should be able to provide the offer of European football to prospects this summer, with the team on course to finish the season in the top six if they win or draw against relegation-threatened Le Havre in the final match of the season on Saturday.
