Simon Jordan has reacted to the news that Mark Robins has left Coventry City.
Simon Jordan has suggested that something has ‘gone on’ after Coventry City confirmed the sacking of Mark Robins after seven years in charge.
The 54-year-old has done an outstanding job with the Sky Blues in his second spell with the club, taking them from League Two to the Championship.
As well as the promotions, there have been many memorable moments along the way, including reaching the FA Cup semi-final last season.
Therefore, it came as a huge surprise when it was announced that Robins had been sacked, even though Coventry are 17th in the table.
Despite being closer to the relegation zone than the top six, they are only seven points away from the play-off places, and they had won two games on the bounce before Wednesday night’s loss to Derby County at home.
Even with the inconsistent campaign, news of Robins’ exit came as a huge shock to Coventry fans, and the football world in general.
And, speaking on TalkSPORT, pundit Jordan revealed that he was surprised by the call, as he suggested that something must have happened behind the scenes to prompt such a swift change, with Coventry back in action in two days' time when they travel to league leaders Sunderland.
“What a strange decision. They've just won two of their last three. They've just beaten Middlesbrough 3-0, who are one of the top sides in the division with expectations.
“They've just beaten Luton 3-2, albeit Luton are struggling right now, but they've still won that game. We weren't so long ago raving about the job that Mark Robbins has done. So there's something that's gone on.
“That's more than just results, surely, because ultimately they've been here before. They were here a while ago. I think it was a season ago or so ago. They started the season with an inability to play games, and they were behind the curve in home games.
“Doug King walked into an environment where you must think football is quite easy. Because Coventry all of a sudden have gone from a side that have been nowhere for 20 odd years, to being in an FA Cup semi-final and two play-off opportunities.”
Many would agree that this was a strange call, particularly with the international break looming.
Admittedly, the performance and result against Derby was very poor, but the side had recorded back-to-back victories prior to that.
Furthermore, the seven point gap to the play-off places isn’t one that can’t be made up considering how long of the season is left.
When you consider what Robins has done for the club, he would’ve felt he could’ve turned things around, but he obviously hasn’t been given the chance to do that.
Now, attention turns to his replacement, and given the ruthless nature of this decision, there will be a lot of pressure on King to get things right, so it will be very interesting to see who does land the job.
