“Strange signing” – William Gallas left baffled by one piece of Chelsea transfer news

Former Blue William Gallas has described Kepa Arrizabalaga’s impending £5m transfer to Arsenal as a “strange signing.”

The Blues are once again set to be busy this summer and have already signed Liam Delap for £30m, whilst they are closing in on a deal for Jamie Gittens.

Chelsea face a critical window and are looking to sign a versatile forward, left winger and centre back to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad ahead of the new season.

Gallas describes Kepa to Arsenal as “strange”

Whilst incomings are important, outgoings are equally important this summer, and the Blues need to move on a number of players who are surplus to requirements.

Kepa, who had a successful loan spell with Bournemouth last season falls into that category, and the 30-year-old can leave for just £5m.

It had been reported the Cherries had made Kepa their priority target, however it appears the Spain international is joining another Premier League club.

It’s been reported Kepa is set to join rivals Arsenal to provide competition for David Raya in a move no one really saw coming, and Gallas has shared his thoughts describing it as “strange.”

“I think Kepa to Arsenal would be a strange signing,” he said as cited on X.com.

“The second choice goalkeeper should be a young player who is learning that can take over from David Raya in a few years time. I’m not sure why you’d bring in someone who is older than him with no eye to the future.”

Chelsea made Kepa the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when they paid Athletic Bilbao £72m for his services back in 2018 and he made 163 appearances for the Blues, winning the Champions League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea won’t sign Mike Maignan this summer

The Blues were strongly linked with Mike Maignan earlier this summer, but failed to agree a deal with AC Milan who wanted £20-£25m, whilst Chelsea weren’t prepared to pay more than £12.6m.

It had been thought the Blues might return later in the window, but it’s been reported Chelsea won’t be signing Maignan this summer.

There’s a possibility the Blues could try and sign the France international on a free in 2026, but it feels like they’ve now missed the boat for the 29-year-old.
