Chelsea continue to make decisions in the market with their sights set on strengthening their squad before the start of next season. The club’s sporting directors have been working quietly for months to make strategic signings to bolster their project.
One of the names that has been on their radar for some time now is Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. The player has given the go-ahead for a transfer, but talks between the clubs have not come to fruition so far. Although the club failed to sign him in time for the Club World Cup, they have not let go of the deal.
TBR football has reported that the club based at Stamford Bridge has already agreed on a long-term personal contract with the player. They have been engaged in talks with the Bundesliga club for quite a long time, but the talks did not accelerate as they would have wanted. However, despite all these issues, Chelsea are still pressing for the English winger.
The 20-year-old is adamant on moving back to the Premier League, and has already said to have rejected good offers from Arsenal and Bayern Munich. Gittens just wants to play at the Stamford Bridge, and the Blues have therefore started talks with the German club on Monday, and hope that a deal will soon come to fruition.
Signing Bynoe-Gittens would be a good coup on Chelsea’s part. Not only because it would be ahead of Bayern Munich in the fight for a player with growing clout in the Bundesliga, but also because he is a profile that is hard to find: good in one-on-one, young and already proven in the top flight.
His 17 goal-scoring appearances last season – goals and assists combined – show a player who makes a difference from the flanks. With more than 40 appearances in the German top flight, he has made it clear that he can make an impact in big games.
Although Gittens still has some work to do, such as his consistency in the final third and his tactical reading, his ability to create individual brilliance puts him above a number of wingers of his generation. Compared to names like Doku or Nusa, Gittens seems less explosive in pure speed, but more solid on the ball and in decision-making.
Chelsea need to close this deal fast. The signing would fit in with the young project they are building. The club have opted for youth and projection, but they also need the present. Bynoe-Gittens represents both. If he can adapt to the pace of the Premier League and maintain his level of attacking production, he could become one of the key pieces of the London attack.
In a squad that sometimes struggles to break down tight defences, a player like him can make all the difference. And if they manage to seal the transfer ahead of clubs like Bayern, we would be talking about a masterstroke in the market.
