Steven Gerrard has stirred the pot once again with a beachside Instagram story from the luxury Four Seasons Bahrain. With the sun blazing, red umbrellas lining the sand, and Clementine Douglas’ “True” playing softly in the background, the message is subtle but unmistakable—he’s nowhere near Ibrox and doesn’t appear to be planning a return any time soon.
Despite widespread fan support for a potential comeback, this relaxed holiday vibe sends a very different signal. The former Rangers boss doesn’t exactly look like a man gearing up for the cauldron of Scottish football. Instead, it feels like he’s content soaking up the Middle Eastern sun while Rangers continue to search for their next manager.
While talks between Rangers and Gerrard have taken place, there’s no real sense of urgency from his side. And that’s fuelling concern among fans. The pain of how he left in 2021 still lingers, and as this opinion piece reflects, a portion of the support remains unconvinced that bringing him back is the right move.
This latest Instagram update hasn’t helped his case. In fact, it reinforces the view that Gerrard might not be emotionally invested in the club anymore. There’s a difference between being open to talks and being all-in for the fight, and right now, Gerrard looks more like a man chilling on vacation than one ready to charge back into the trenches at Ibrox.
The contrast couldn’t be starker. Rangers are in the middle of yet another rebuild, the managerial hotseat is wide open, and fans are desperate for clarity and commitment. Gerrard, meanwhile, is casually documenting luxury poolside moments from the Gulf.
Whether or not this ends up being a temporary escape or a sign he’s not interested, the optics don’t lie. If Gerrard genuinely wants a second crack at Rangers, he’ll need to prove it—not just with meetings behind closed doors, but with clear intent and passion. Right now, all we’re seeing is a man enjoying his downtime, and for many Rangers fans, that just isn’t enough.
