Rangers boss Steven Gerrard got his first taste of one of the clubâs stranger traditions this weekend.
Ahead of Saturdayâs match, the directors of both Rangers and St Mirren took part in the fabled Loving Cup ceremony in which a toast is made to the health of the reigning monarch before clubâs first home match of each calendar year.
And hereâs what happened âŠ
âIâll be making subs after five minutes!â joked Gerrard after taking a swig from the booze-filled cup.
According to the Gersâ website, the cup is one of only thirty cast from a unique mould to commemorate the coronation in May 1937 of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
That year, the 22 English First Division clubs were each presented with identical Loving Cups and Rangers were asked to take part in a charity match against Stoke City for the families of the miners who were killed in the Holditch Colliery Disaster.
The game finished 0-0 and afterwards, Potters president Sir Francis Joseph presented Rangers with the last of the Loving Cups as a show of gratitude for their kindness.
His one request was that the vessel should be used in perpetuity to drink to the health of the reigning monarch prior to the clubâs first home match of every year and 82 years later, the tradition is still going strong.
Thankfully, Gerrardâs drop of alcohol didnât seem to have an effect on his managerial skills. His side beat St Mirren 4-0.
