The Athletic have put out an article along with stats that prove to me that Enzo Maresca and Chelsea need to sign Mike Maignan.
Yesterday was a bit of a wild day for Chelsea Football Club and in all honesty, they became a bit of a laughing stock after they publicly failed to get two new signings in the door.
Chelsea were chasing a deal to sign goalkeeper Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup starts, with the transfer deadline running out at 7pm last night. It was announced quite early in the day by Fabrizio Romano that the deal for Chelsea to sign Maignan was OFF!
So then Chelsea tried to sign Jamie Gittens from Dortmund and that one became the big headline news of the afternoon. But they couldn’t even get that one done either even after throwing in a late offer to sign him.
It was not a great day for Chelsea at all and the club managed to annoy and frustrate their entire fan base once again.
It’s perfect feasible and possible that Chelsea still try and sign Mike Maignan in the next summer transfer window that opens on June the 16th, and as I’ve reported in my exclusive above, I’ve actually heard they will.
And lets be honest here, they NEED to!
The Athletic have reviewed Chelsea’s pursuit of Maignan and looked at some stats. This to me proves that Chelsea need to go back and sign him ASAP.
Liam Twomey writes:
‘Mike Maignan’s ability to be a net positive in terms of keeping the ball out of his goal, over the equivalent of more than 250 league appearances for Lille and Milan, marks him out as a safe pair of hands.
‘When it comes to being a sweeper-keeper, Mike Maignan is as active as they come; no goalkeeper in Europe’s top four leagues (England, Germany, Italy and Spain) made more ball recoveries outside their penalty area in 2024-25.
‘Despite his repeated public vows to substitute Sanchez if he kicks the ball long, Enzo Maresca does recognise the value of more direct kicking from his goalkeeper in certain situations.
‘The results of this with Sanchez have been pretty erratic, and it is hard not to conclude that Maignan would at least be an upgrade in this regard.’
