Chelsea are showing strong interest in signing Benfica defender Tomas Araujo, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.
The Blues are keen to strengthen their backline after qualifying for the Champions League next season.
Manager Enzo Maresca has already secured striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town as his first signing.
With the club missing out on Dean Huijsen, who opted to join Real Madrid, they have shifted focus to other defensive options.
Araujo is being seriously considered as a key addition to the squad. The young defender signed a new deal with Benfica in November last year.
His contract runs until 2029 and includes an €80 million release clause. Benfica want to keep Araujo, but they fear losing him if a big offer comes from a top European club.
Liverpool are also keeping a close eye on Araujo’s progress.
Araujo is a versatile defender who can play as both a centre-back and a right-back. He is known for his calm style of play and ability to read the game well.
The 23-year-old prefers to rely on positioning and timing rather than diving into tackles. He is also comfortable with the ball at his feet, able to pass, dribble, and stay composed under pressure.
His pace and strength make him difficult to beat during transitions, and he often recovers quickly when out of position. These qualities make him a perfect fit for Maresca’s defensive system.
Whether Benfica will sell him this summer depends on the size of the offer. They are likely to drive a hard bargain given Araujo’s potential.
