Canada name MLS heavy squad

Manager John Herdman has named his 21-man squad for Canada’s pre-World Cup friendly against Bahrain on 11th November.

Unsurprisingly many of the Canadian players plying their trade in Europe have been left due to their club seasons still ongoing, but this provides an opportunity for the players still located in North America.

Notably, there is a first international call-up for Toronto FC defender Lukas MacNaughton who just two years ago was playing in the Canadian Premier League.

Nashville set to commit to Shaffelburg

Sticking to Canadian internationals, one name on the list for the upcoming friendly is Jacob Shaffelburg.

The 22-year-old has already featured three times for his country and, following a successful loan spell in Texas, Nashville SC are set to sign the Canadian on a permanent deal.

Shaffelburg joined from Toronto FC during the summer and according to Tom Bogert, Nashville will pick up the trade option for the forward who impressed in the latter half of the season.

The best of XI of 2022

MLS have released their best XI for the 2022 season which includes five players that will feature in the MLS Cup: Carlos Vela (LAFC), Dániel Gazdag (Philadelphia Union), Kai Wagner (Philadelphia Union), Jakob Glesnes (Philadelphia Union) and Andre Blake (Philadelphia Union).

This is Blake’s third appearance, more than any other goalkeeper.

Anton Tinnerholm leaves NYCFC

New York City FC are going to be in the market for a new defender as Anton Tinnerholm is set to leave the club after five years.

The 31-year-old is out of contract following NYCFC’s defeat to Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference final and, speaking to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, the defender explained “it is difficult to have such a far home from the rest of the family.”

Tinnerholm is expected to return to his native Sweden and will be available as a free agent in the January transfer window.

USMNT injury update

As we tick into November the Qatar World Cup arrives at a frightening pace and Paul Tenorio, of The Athletic, took a look at some of the USMNT stars and how they are faring.

Notable injury concerns include: Matt Turner (Arsenal), Sergiño Dest (AC Milan), Chris Richards (Crystal Palace), Weston McKennie (Juventus), Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo) and Josh Sargent (Norwich).

Throwback rack

As he celebrates his 22nd birthday, let’s throw it back to Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies’ early days plying his trade in Canada with Vancouver Whitecaps.

Having just broken into the first team, here you can see Davies hunting down Tigres forward André-Pierre Gignac before he swapped Concacaf for Uefa.

Davies is looking a little skinny here, in yet another great example of the Bayern Munich gym effect.

Only three days to go until the MLS Cup so make sure you’re free this Saturday.
