Sunderland are just ahead of Sheffield Wednesday in the race for striker Ike Ugbo, who believes he could put down roots at the Stadium of Light, according to the Star.
The hitman spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and was a big player in Danny Rohl’s battle against relegation.
Rohl wants Ugbo back and the striker would be keen to join on a permanent basis from French side Troyes, with personal terms agreed.
Sunderland are also battling for Ugbo though and amid Wednesday having agreed a fee but crucially not a payment structure acceptable to Troyes, the Black Cats are in the lead.
Regis Le Bris’ side are closer to signing Ugbo and the striker does believe he could put down roots at the Stadium of Light.
He is happy with the project on offer at Sunderland and prepared to join.
Whether Sunderland can finalise an agreement with Troyes for the hitman over the coming days remains to be seen, but Sheffield Wednesday are at risk of losing out.
A fee in the region of £2.5m is needed to land Ugbo, but the payment terms must also work for Troyes.
