Norwich City conclude their Belgium training camp with a Saturday afternoon meeting against Standard de Liège.
This will be Norwich’s third pre-season fixture. They secured a 3-0 win against Northampton but suffered a 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge earlier in the week.
In January 2024, former Croatian international Ivan Leko took charge of Standard Liege, leading them to a 10th-place finish in the Belgian Pro League. They then finished fifth in the play-off section for European qualification.
The hosts new campaign will kick off with a match against Genk on Sunday, July 28th. In the pre-season matches so far, they have secured victories against Aubel FC (5-0) and NEC Nijmegen (2-1).
If things had gone differently, Norwich would be heading into the 2024/25 season as a Premier League club. Having been demoted in 2022, the Canaries finished sixth under David Wagner last season, which sealed a play-off spot.
Norwich met Leeds in the semi-finals, with the opening leg at Carrow Road ending goalless. The return leg in Yorkshire was a bruising experience as the East Anglian team suffered a 4-0 loss. Less than 24 hours later, Wagner was dismissed, with Danish tactician Johannes Hoff Thorup, who previously managed Nordsjælland, appointed as the club’s new head coach on a three-year contract.
“The goal is the Premier League,” Thorup told Danish outlet Bold.
“I probably won’t get criticism if we don’t move up next season, but we have talked about building a sustainable project. They are annoyed that they are relegated from the Premier League immediately every time, because the foundation has not been strong enough.
“We have talked about the Premier League being the ambition after season two, so that we can build something strong, and we can get the academy integrated better, while also being supplemented with players from outside.
“We must create a style of play, a culture and an environment that is so strong that the team can manage in the Premier League. Therefore, I also have the feeling that there is quite a lot of patience, and that it is a process that needs to be carried out.”

So far this summer, Standard have welcomed three new players, all on free transfers. Grejohn Kyei (Clermont Foot), Bosko Sutalo (Dinamo Zagreb), and Boli Bolingoli (KV Mechelen) were all signed, along with Marko Bulat, who is on loan from Dinamo Zagreb. Cihan Çanak, Denis Drăguș (both Trabzonspor), and Noah Ohio (FC Utrecht) have left the club.
Norwich, meanwhile, have signed José Córdoba (Levski Sofia) while letting go of Christos Tzolis (Fortuna Düsseldorf) and free agents Ben Gibson (Stoke City), Sam McCallum (Sheffield United), and Jon McCracken (Dundee FC). Meanwhile, Dimitrios Giannoulis and Danny Batth have seen their contracts expire and Sydney van Hooijdonk (Bologna) has returned to his parent club following a loan spell.
Standard Liege vs Norwich City is being played at Stade Maurice Dufrasne in Liège. The match kicks off on Saturday, 20th July, at 2pm (UK time) and will be broadcast live in the UK on Canaries TV.
