Spurs Women fight back to draw at Everton, Aston Villa win at Brighton

Spurs came from two down to draw at Everton in the Barclays Women’s Super League, Aston Villa won 1-0 away to Brighton.

Clinical in front of goal early on, Everton were two up against Spurs in quarter of an hour. Sara Holmgaard got her first for the club with a powerful drive into the far corner, Justine Vanhaevermaet bundled the ball over the line after Spurs were unable to clear.

Tottenham worked to get back into the game and a Beth England header was tipped over by Courtney Brosnan, before Drew Spence hit the post when one-on-one with the keeper.

Ashleigh Neville intervened to prevent Spurs likely conceding a third and they were back in the game during first-half added time, Eveliina Summanen’s quick long ball collected and turned home by Spence.

Within three minutes of the start of the second half, Spence won the ball as Everton tried to play out of the back and put it on a plate for England to tap in.

Wang Shuang’s shot was pushed away by Brosnan, who also got a boot to Martha Thomas’s close range effort and tipped a Kit Graham strike round the post.

Although Spurs were denied a winner, they did secure a sixth-place finish.

Aston Villa sealed seventh spot with the only goal of the game away to Brighton, who slip to ninth.

Kirsty Hanson hit the home bar from 25 yards in the first half, Villa eventually making the breakthrough after the hour mark.

Rachel Daly threatened in the box but the loose ball from Maria Thorisdottir’s interception was buried under goalkeeper Melina Loeck by Alisha Lehmann.
