Yves Bissouma has been left out of the Tottenham squad to face Paris St. Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday evening for disciplinary reasons.
Bissouma will be missing when Spurs face European Champions PSG in Udine for persistent lateness.
Bissouma was previously left out of the Spurs squad for their opening match of last season, against Leicester, after the player posted a video of him taking laughing gas and now his manager Thomas Frank has confirmed that the Mali international has been left out for being late to team meetings.
“Bissouma has not travelled owing to disciplinary reasons. He’s been late several times and now this time, the latest time, was one too many,” said Frank in Udine on Tuesday afternoon.
“I think with everything you need to give your players a lot of love, but also you must have demands and there need to be consequences. This time there was a consequence for that.”
Tottenham are looking for a new captain now that Heung-Min Son has left for LAFC, and Frank revealed he will make an announcement before kick-off in Italy. “The captain will be named tomorrow, and the leadership group will be known by the end of the month.”
Cristian Romero has captained the side during pre-season and his manager says the World Cup-winning Argentine defender will be a key player against PSG.
“Romero is going to be very big and important player for us tomorrow. He’s a player that has been in big finals and won them. He knows how to win finals and that will be a big help.”
Frank also spoke about the importance of the Spurs team having won the Europa League under his predecessor Ange Postecoglou.
“I think it is very important that these players, just like the PSG players, have just won a big trophy six or seven weeks ago, had a fantastic experience of doing that, and they want to win more.
“It was a great feeling from everything I heard about it, everything I’ve seen, a fantastic experience. The players will be ready and of course Romero will be crucial.”
Destiny Udogie, Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Radu Dragusin and Kota Takai were all out with injury in last week’s 4-0 defeat by Bayern Munich, and only Solanke has recovered.
“Players that have longer term injuries are here to back the team but Dom is available for selection, and Udogie is close.”
