Middlesbrough will be looking to find some much needed consistency following the conclusion of the international break, with Neil Warnock’s side currently sitting 15th in the Sky Bet Championship.

Their slow start to the campaign follows on from what has been a busy summer transfer window at the Riverside Stadium, with the club bringing in a total of 12 new players to supplement their existing squad.

Meanwhile there was also a total of 13 departures, with the turnover of players being sanctioned with a view to getting the club aiming to be in and around the top six places this year.

Given how Boro have started thus far, it would be fair to assume that the club will once again be busy when winter rolls around in a few months.

Here, we take a look at TWO Middlesbrough transfer scenarios that could materialise in the January window…

Spence to leave?

Djed Spence headed out on loan to Nottingham Forest over the summer in a move which will have shocked many people.

Since completing his move to the City Ground, the youngster has gone on to thrive under both Chris Hughton and more recently Steve Cooper, with the Reds having elected to play him in a more advanced wing back role.

This position allows him to stride forward and really have a lasting effect in the final third of the pitch, as seen with his recent goal against Birmingham City.

With Spence performing so well, Forest could potentially make a permanent move for him in January, with Boro potentially being open to selling.

Boro could well explore the possibility of recalling Hayden Coulson early from his loan spell with Ipswich Town in order to solve their left back problems.

The 23-year-old was sent out to the League One side on a temporary basis in order to give him the game time he craves, however it has left Boro short of options in that area of the field.

Marc Bola is their first choice option on the left hand side, however there isn’t much in the way of adequate back up for the defender.

Warnock recently admitted that the club’s search for a free agent left back had failed to pay off, which means the door could open for Coulson come the turn of the new year.
