There’s a lot of excitement surrounding Middlesbrough as Chris Wilder prepares for his first full season in charge.

Having taken the Teesside outfit to the brink of the play-offs in the previous campaign, many see Boro as genuine automatic promotion contenders this time around, although new additions will be needed.

And, whilst the likes of Darragh Lenihan and Ryan Giles look like shrewd signings, Boro still need a lot more and they are expected to be busy in the coming weeks.

So, there’s constantly news and speculation involving Boro and here we provide a round-up of what went on this weekend…

Have each of these 24 ex-Middlesbrough academy players ever played in the Premier League?

Yes No

Spence to Spurs still likely

A key trigger to Boro’s business this summer is Spence, with the right wing-back expected to fetch a significant fee that will allow them to spend.

Despite constant speculation, a breakthrough still hasn’t happened but that doesn’t mean it won’t. The recent reports have suggested that a £20m deal should be struck and announcement could come this week.

The main area of the pitch that Boro need to strengthen is up top.

Andraz Sporar, Folarin Balogun and Aaron Connolly were all part of the squad last season but are no longer at the club after their loan spells ended, meaning Boro lack both quality and depth up top.

Therefore, at least three new attacking options are expected to arrive but so far Boro have failed to land the players Wilder wants and he has admitted it’s frustrating, but he is still confident that they will get the business done.

Derby chase David McGoldrick

One deal that Boro did look likely to complete was McGoldrick’s signing.

The experienced former Ireland international is without a club after leaving Sheffield United and he is obviously well known to Wilder after playing a starring role during their successful time together at Bramall Lane.

However, Derby are thought to be monitoring the player closely now as well. Whilst they’re at a lower level, it’s nearer to home for the Nottingham-born player and he could get more minutes at Pride Park.
