The ‘football god’ scored six times on an emotional evening in front of 32,000 adoring Eintracht fans.

Over 32,000 fans, a number of former teammates and legends including Jay-Jay Okocha, David Abraham, Carlos Zambrano, Uwe Bein, Karl-Heinz-Körbel and Anthony Yeboah, among many others, created a magical evening at Deutsche Bank Park on Wednesday for Alex Meier’s testimonial.

The match between Meier’s team and an all-star XI – coached by Friedhelm Funkel - ended in an 8-8 draw, with the football god himself scoring six times. The Meier show was only brought to an end by coach Armin Veh, who took his former player off in the 86th minute so that he could make a fitting exit.

Meier received a lengthy standing ovation from the crowd, who chanted his name as he left the field after receiving a number of heartfelt hugs. The Eintracht family bows down before you!

“Everyone who’s here, be it the fans, coaches or players, accompanied me during my career,” said Meier afterwards. “I would like to thank them for that. The fact that legends like Charly, Jay-Jay and Tony came is unbelievable, but it also goes to show just how big the Eintracht family is.” Anthony Yeboah: “Frankfurt is like a second home for me. I’m very happy to be here. I got to know Alex three or four years ago, he’s got a big heart and is a fantastic person. He told me about his testimonial match recently and I told him I would definitely be there. He’s deserved an evening like this because he’s done so much for Eintracht Frankfurt. The fans love him. I wish him all the very best.”

CEO Axel Hellmann: “Today we said farewell to one of our greats, a legend of the game, our friend Alex Meier. 14 years as a professional for one club in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, with 379 appearances, 137 goals and finishing as top scorer twice. You are an extraordinary person – approachable, down-to-earth, easy-going, humble and always looking out for others. You want to donate the proceeds from today’s game to a good cause – that is something special. One of the greatest players in our club’s history is leaving us after this match: Alex Meier, football legend!”
