The Spanish Football Federation have confirmed that a press conference will take place later, with reports suggesting they could have a new coach in place for their match against Portugal on Friday.

The national team have been thrown into disarray after Julen Lopetegui was confirmed as next season’s Real Madrid boss – just a week after he had signed a contract extension with La Roja.

RFEF chief Luis Rubiales will talk to the gathered press in Krasnodar on Wednesday, but reports are claiming that Fernando Hierro or Under-21 manager Albert Celades could take over from Lopetegui in time for their opening World Cup match against the Portuguese in two days time.

Rubiales was thought to be furious after he learned, just five minutes before the official announcement from Los Blancos, that Lopetegui would be leaving for Santiago Bernabèu after the World Cup.

The press conference is due for 11.30 CET.
