Southampton are not discussing a move for Coventry City’s Viktor Gyokeres, according to The Athletic.
The Saints had been monitoring the forward, with Football League World exclusively revealing their initial interest last month.
However, it is now understood that the 24-year old is not a target for the upcoming January transfer window.
The club believes he would fit the right profile of player that they would like to have in the squad, with the Swede impressing in the Championship over the last couple of seasons.
But, more experience is seen as a potential need for Nathan Jones’ side, which may be what the recruitment team prioritise this winter, with the club seeking to maintain their status as a Premier League squad.
Coventry will be aiming to keep the striker beyond the winter window given his importance to Mark Robins’ team.

Gyokeres has provided 28 league goals over the last 18 months, helping the side to compete for promotion in the second division.
Up next for Coventry is a visit to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United this afternoon.
The Verdict
Gyokeres has been crucial to this team over the last couple of seasons so this will come as a boost to Robins.
There may still be interest from the Championship for Gyokeres but that will prove easier to fend off than interest from the top flight.
Coventry have had a very disruptive period off the pitch, but speculation surrounding their players will have an even bigger impact on the squad.
Having this shut down before January will help Robins to focus on the task at hand of improving the team’s standing in the table as they push for promotion.
