Southampton look like they could be in for a potentially busy deadline day.

Russell Martin’s side are currently in the hunt for promotion straight back to the Premier League, after finishing bottom in the top flight last season.

They currently sit in third position in the league, just one point off of the automatic promotion places.

In a bid to strengthen their bid for promotion, the Saints have brought in both Joe Rothwell and David Brooks on loan from Bournemouth already in January.

It will be interesting to see if Saints do try to bring in one or two more on the final day of the January transfer window.

In a late departure from St Mary’s, Carlos Alcaraz has made the move to Italian giants Juventus. He has joined on a loan deal until the end of the season.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Saints will receive a €3.7 million loan fee with €1.9 million in add-ons.

There is also an option to buy at the end of the season for €49.5 million. This could prove to be some brilliant business from Saints.

The arrival of Brooks means it should not make much of a dent in Saints’ attacking output either.

Sekou Mara stance amid Premier League interest

Sekou Mara has struggled for game time this season, only starting one league game so far, making his other 15 appearances off the bench.

Which could mean that he may want to leave for more regular game time.

According to Ed Aarons, the Premier League’s bottom club Sheffield United are one of several clubs keen on taking Mara.

However, Saints will not let him leave on loan, with Mara still being part of Martin’s plans.

Mara is a talented player, and definitely one for the future. With Che Adams’ long-term future at the club still up in the air, there may be a better future at St Mary’s for Mara, if he were to stick around.

Mason Holgate potentially on the move

Mason Holgate has struggled to find his feet at St Mary’s since he joined in the summer on loan from Everton.

The 27-year-old has only made five appearances in the league for Saints, with Jan Bednarek and Taylor Harwood-Bellis keeping him out of the team.

This has led to plenty of talk about his loan being cancelled at Saints to allow Holgate to go elsewhere and get regular game time.

According to Football Insider, German Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart have approached Everton about taking Holgate on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Sheffield United are also interested, as they look to shore up at the back to boost their survival chances.

It will be interesting to see whether Holgate is still at St Mary’s past the 11pm deadline, but you can understand if he would want to leave to get regular game time, especially if it is in the Premier League.
