21-year-old Dan N’Lundulu gave the Saints the lead with his first goal for the club on his first ever start.

The striker worked a shot for himself and drilled the ball into the bottom corner after Shrewsbury had failed to clear James Ward-Prowse’s long ball into the penalty area.

The League One side were up against a much-changed Southampton side but failed to threaten Frazer Forster in goal with Matthew Pennington’s header deflecting wide turning out to be their best opening of the second half.

Che Adams made his return to the side off the bench and should’ve doubled their lead when he rounded Matija Šarkić before having his shot cleared off the line.

It was left to their captain Ward-Prowse to round the tie off with a trademark free-kick which crept past Šarkić in the dying minutes to seal their place in the next round.
