Southampton international scout Piet Buter has confirmed interest in SC Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman.

Buter admits they're watching the youngster, considering him one for the future.

Veerman, 21, has emerged as one of the most promising young players in the Eredivisie after joining Heerenveen last year from Volendam. He was a regular at Volendam from 17 years of age, spending three years in the first team before winning his move to Heerenveen. Veerman has a contract with the Eredivisie outfit to 2024.

Buter admits Saints having been watching and will continue to do so. He told NH via Voetbalzone: "He is of course a very good football player.

"And it would be foolish not to follow a 21-year-old boy with those qualities. He is a game player with great technique. He has very good insight into the game, a nice pass and takes all corners and free kicks. An interesting player.

"He is not yet good enough defensively. The pace is still a bit too low and the switch could be better. He is Premier League-worthy on the ball, but without the ball he still has to take a number of steps."

Buter also revealed Southampton were beaten by PSV Eindhoven to the signing of Toulouse midfielder Ibrahim Sangare - a deal that surprised those on the south coast.

He added, "We thought we had one with Ibrahim Sangaré from Toulouse, but to our great surprise he chose PSV."

Saints were able to make up for that miss, however, with their swoop for Brest midfielder Ibrahim Diallo before last Monday's transfer deadline.
